It seems like Lent just began, but we are already nearing the end and Holy Week is coming up soon. One of the things I love about Holy Week is that it presents multiple unique ways to talk about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. On Palm Sunday we have the amazing image of Jesus riding into the city on a colt and we can easily see the humility and amazing love of Jesus that led him to the cross. Throughout the week we see Jesus’ passion and care displayed in his miracles and his cleansing of the temple. On Maundy Thursday the images of Jesus washing feet and breaking bread show us his humility again, but also clearly display that everything he is about to endure is for our sakes. Of course, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday bring all of their own deeply moving pictures of what Jesus endured for our salvation.
All of these images make it a season where it is easier to help children to connect with the amazing truth of the gospel. Of course, we will do some of these as a church community. We will wave palm branches on Palm Sunday and talk about what it means to glorify Jesus. We will have the Easter Eggstravaganza this Thursday, April 7. We will have a Maundy Thursday service on April 14. However, I would encourage you to think about some of the ways you can use other images to connect with the young people in your life (or to help yourself celebrate the season). Below are some suggestions of some different things you could do during Lent or Holy Week to help celebrate and help young people understand and embrace these important days.
