Jesus Said, "I AM..."

“Hello! What’s your name?” These words are the beginning of nearly all relationships outside our families. Names have power. At Wednesday Club, First Presbyterian Church’s outreach ministry to elementary school children, we always teach the Golden Rule. Luke and Matthew both record Jesus telling his followers to “treat others the way you want to be treated.” This fall we asked the children to greet people by name each day, and they have been practicing and getting quite good at remembering to do so. This fits with our fall theme: Jesus tells us he is God and he loves us!

Moses is the first person to ask God what his name is. You can ask any of the 33 Wednesday Club kids and they will tell you God’s name is I AM. They can also tell you that Jesus is God’s son, and he told the world this by using God’s name, I AM, to describe himself several times. He did so when meeting our many needs.

Need for food – I AM the Bread of Life (John 6:48)

Emotional needs – I AM the Light of the World (John 8:12)

Security needs – I AM the Gate for the Sheep (John 10:7) and

I AM the Good Shepherd (John 10:14)

Desire for life and eternity – I AM the Resurrection (John 11:25)

Need for a guide – I AM the Way, the Truth, the Life (John 14:6)

Need for connection and love – I AM the True Vine (John 15:1)

Our Wednesday Club kids are working hard to fill the world with God’s love by following the Golden Rule and building relationships with others by using their names and helping them. They are learning that following Jesus is the best path for their lives, and they are working to follow his command to love one another. And they've had a lot of fun while doing so!

You can help with this ministry by praying for the children and volunteers, providing snacks, riding the bus, or helping on Wednesday afternoons. Contact the church office for more information: (641)753-5929
